Remembering the Srebrenica Massacre
This week marks the 25th anniversary of Srebrenica massacre. Here in the Des Moines Metro we have a significant population of Bosnian Muslims who lost loved ones and fled that atrocity to find new life here in Iowa.
When I was a hospital chaplain for Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago I sat vigil with a family as their son was dying of cancer. They were Bosnian Muslims. That night they told me about genocide: one day they were our neighbors, the next day they were killing us.
We must remember that the worst can and does happen, and be intentional to respect and protect our neighbors of all faiths and ethnicities.
